A little thank you for being a Foreign Bodies subscriber
PSA: This giveaway is only open to paying subscribers or comps (gifted subscriptions). Please—if you haven’t yet—subscribe and help keep Foreign Bodies afloat!
“People speak of schizophrenics as if they were dead without being dead, gone in the eyes of those around them… [H]uman catastrophes can bear the weight of human narrative — war, kidnapping, death — but schizophrenia’s built-in chaos resists sense.”
—Esmé Weijun Wang
Welcome to the second giveaway of 2020, Foreign Bodies! Eager to share this gorgeous collection of essays from second-generation Taiwanese American writer Esmé Weijun Wang with a new reader. The Collected Schizophrenias, winner of the 2016 Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize, is an honest and intimate work of art intertwining evidence-based reporting and Wang’s own experience of psychosis. I hope it really challenges what you know or think you know about the oft misrepresented schizophrenias.
I’ll be mailing the winning subscriber a copy of the collection, packaged with a note from the beloved author herself. Entries accepted through Friday, Feb. 7 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
Praise for The Collected Schizophrenias
“In essays that range from using fashion to present as high-functioning to the depths of a rare form of psychosis, and from the failures of the higher education system and the dangers of institutionalization to the complexity of compounding factors such as PTSD and Lyme disease, Wang’s analytical eye, honed as a former lab researcher at Stanford, allows her to balance research with personal narrative. An essay collection of undeniable power, The Collected Schizophrenias dispels misconceptions and provides insight into a condition long misunderstood.”
—Graywolf Press
The Collected Schizophrenias won the 2016 Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize, the 2018 Whiting Award for Nonfiction and was named one of TIME’s Best Books of 2019. Learn more about Esmé Wang and her work here.
