Monday Matter: Creation myth, apologies and failure in an immigrant family
Your weekly Foreign Bodies roundup
Every Monday, we send subscribers and gift recipients of immigrant mental health and storytelling newsletter Foreign Bodies stories we recently inhaled and adored. This is also a chance to do some housekeeping and give shout-outs and all that jazz. Roundups are usually written by Fiza and edited by Farah.
First things first
A little housekeeping
Hi, again!
A little personal update from me: I’m starting a new gig at the end of the month and had to take a little hiatus last week to prep and tie up some prior commitments. Appreciate anyone who popped in to say hi to share 2022 book giveaway recommendation picks! I hope you’re all taking it easy and getting some offline time when the world feels especially heavy.
A musical start to your Mondays 🎧
One song to groove to, cry to, drive to and share
This week’s pick is French singer-songwriter Françoise Hardy, known for her melancholic, sentimental ballads. According to this 2018 Guardian profile, Hardy was the face of 1960s French pop, and as her fame grew, she drew fans among the likes of Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan. “Her songs, however jaunty they sounded, often evinced a kind of dreamy sadness… That wistfulness contrasted nicely with her perfectly pitched style, poise and captivating beauty. It was a combination that caused a generation of male adolescents on both sides of the Channel to fall head over heels in love with her – or, more precisely, with the idea of her that the songs suggested.”
